Things too look for when buying a guitar:
- intonation (up and down the neck);
- the neck is good (fender style are normally thinner);
- low action (low height of the strings);
- has to fit your body (not too big, not too small), comfortable to play sitting down or standing up;

Models
The most famous models are the stratocaster and telecaster (from fender) and the Les Paul from Gibson. There are copies of this original models made by all kind of guitar brands.
