MIDI_KeyMap is a built in Reaper plug-in, helpful when you want to remap instrument keys (for example to map your electronic drums with a VSTi like Addictive Drums).
To define a map you edit a txt file that you then open with the plugin.

  • In Reaper load MIDI_KeyMap and your VSTi to the fx stack of the same track
    Note: order matters, MIDI_KeyMap must be on top of Adictive Drums. This way, for example, when a C1 key is played the plug-in will remap it and send for example an E1 to Addictive Drums.

    After the plug-in, load Addictive Drums

    ---
  • Find where MIDI_KeyMap txt map files reside:
    Inside Reaper go to: "Options" -> "Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder..."

    This will open a explorer window where Reaper plug-ins are installed.
    In my case this was "C:\Documents and Settings\_Tero_\Application Data\REAPER"

    From this Folder, open the "Data" then the "ix_keymaps
    You are now at: "C:\Documents and Settings\_Tero_\Application Data\REAPER\Data\ix_keymaps"
    ---
  • Make a copy of the MIDI_KeyMap existing map file "00 - Default Mapping.txt" and open it with notepad.
    You'll use this txt file to remap the keys (changing the first column numbers according to your edrums and your software).
    ---
  • Untill you have all the keys perfectly remapped you'll have to:
    Edit the txt file (in notepad);
    Save it (in notepad);
    Reload it on the plugin (in Reaper);

    ---
  • Your edrums will now sound correctly.
    But if you remove the plugin from the FX stack it will sound wrong again.

    In other words: your midi file was recorded with the wrong map. When playing this midi file, MIDI_KeyMap remaps it (converts) before reaching Addictive Drums where it will sound correctly.

    If you want to permanently convert your recorded MIDI file to the correct keys you can follow this steps:
    1. Remove the Addictive Drums from the previous track ("1. edrum recorded") so that it has only the MIDI_KeyMap enabled on the FX stack.
    2. Create a new track ("2. midi remap").
    3. On "2. midi remap" load Addictive Drums to the FX stack and arm it for record;
    4. On "2. midi remap" configure the input/output so that: the input of this track will be the output of the other track (so it will record the correct mapped keys);

    5. Its all done: the first track will act has an input for the second track (playing instead of you) and the second track will receive and record the keys remapped.
      Just press the record button (TIP: increase the bpm so that it records instantly).

    Result example (note how the second track has the keys remapped to higher values):

    Podemos criar MIDIs de várias formas no Reaper.
    1. Primeiro preparamos o ambiente de gravação;
    2. Depois escolhemos um dos modos de criação/gravação:

    Preparar o ambiente:

    • Criar nova pista: na zona das pistas (lado esquerdo) fazer duplo click numa área vazia para criar uma nova pista;
    • Atribuir o instrumento virtual (VSTi) à pista (para definir o som do instrumento, por ex. bateria, piano, ...)
      Por exemplo, se quisermos utilizar o VSTi de bateria "Addictive Drums":
      • Clicar no botão "fx" da pista:

      • Na nova janela selecionar o instrumento VSTi pretendido:

      • O instrumento está atribuído e pode-se fechar as duas janelas de popup para voltar à janela principal do Reaper.

    Criar MIDI manualmente utilizando o editor MIDI:

    • Com o rato selecionar a pista pretendida
    • Na barra de menu selecionar  "Insert" -> "New MIDI item" (aparece um novo take na pista)
    • Duplo click no novo take para abrir o editor MIDI
    • Editar e no final fechar a janela do editor para voltar à janela principal do Reaper;
    Nota:
    When using Reapers MIDI Editor to edit drums, you can change the left piano keyboard by labels of the drums kit pieces ("kick", "tom", "ride", etc.). Look for the option to activate this on the main menu "View" and then in "File" you'll have an option to load a set of "Midi-Drum-Maps" (a txt file with the labels). A List of this  maps (txt files) can be found here:

      Criar MIDI através do teclado virtual do Reaper (gravação com teclado virtual):

      • Abrir o teclado virtual: selecionar na barra de menus "View" -> "Virtual MIDI keyboard"
        Nota: clicando com o botão direito no teclado virtual podemos selecionar a opção de todas as teclas premidas serem imediatamente enviadas para ele. Desta forma não precisamos de o selecionar/activar com o rato sempre que o queremos utilizar. Não esquecer, depois de gravar, de tirar esta opção caso contrário teclas como "delete" não irão funcionar normalmente por estarem a ser enviadas para o teclado virtual.
      • Armar a pista para gravação:
      • Selecionar o virtual keyboard como o instrumento de input da gravação:
      • Escolher o tipo de gravação que queremos:
        Existem várias opções como:
        • "Record: input": novas gravações criam um novo take paralelo aos já existentes;
        • "Record: MIDI overdub in existing items": novas gravações usam o take já existente, completando o MIDI com novas notas;
        • outros...
      • Se quisermos ouvir o instrumento durante a gravação ativamos a opção "Record Monitoring: ON":
      • Finalmente gravar:
        • Clicar no botão de gravação

        • Clicar no teclado virtual para este ficar ativo

        • Usar o teclado do computador para tocar;
        • No final parar a gravação

      Criar MIDI através dum instrumento MIDI (gravação, por exemplo, com uma bateria electrónica

      1. Ligar o instrumento ao computador: A maioria dos instrumentos modernos permitem uma ligação USB-USB para fácil utilização, sendo o instrumento reconhecido automaticamente pelo computador.
        Se o instrumento não for reconhecido pelo computador ou se for preciso outro tipo de cabos (MIDI-MIDI ou MIDI-USB ou MIDI-Gameport) verificar a seguinte página para algumas dicas: Connecting a MIDI instrument to your computer;
        ---
      2. Definir o instrumento MIDI como input de gravação: o wiki oficial do Reaper possui um artigo dedicado a este passo em Recording MIDI;
        ---
      3.  Facultativo - este passo só costuma ser necessário quando se está a usar uma bateria eletrónica em vez de um teclado MIDI - Set the correct mapping between your edrum and your software:
        When using MIDI electronic drums a common problem is the notes coming from your instrument don't match your software mapping (ex. Addictive Drums software). For example: your edrum sends a C1 note when you play the kick, but your software expects an E1 for the kick). To solve this you need to set the correct mapping between your edrum and your software. This can be accomplished in many different ways:

      Connecting a MIDI instrument to your computer

      See this tutorial: How do I connect a MIDI instrument to my computer?
      • USB to USB (using just a standard USB cable): Every modern MIDI controller keyboard now come with a USB connection for easy use with computers. Some keyboard are even 'class complient' which means you don't even need to install any software. The cable you need for a USB to USB connection is just a standard USB cable which should be included with your keyboard.
      • MIDI to MIDI: Some audio interfaces such as the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 or the Tascam US-122 combine Audio & MIDI I/O enabling your to connect your keyboard directly to your sound card.
      • MIDI to USB port: If your sound card doesn't have MIDI connections and your keyboard doesn't have USB then the next best option is a USB to MIDI interface such as the M-Audio Uno or the Edirol UM 1X.
      • MIDI to soundcard gameport: If you have a joystick port then all you need is a cable that has a 15 pin 'D' connector at one end and MIDI connectors on the other.
