see 2:20 of this youtube movie - Legato and Staccato: is a music general term. On the guitar you can use it either on solo or chords. This is also very used by bass players. Legato means letting the sound flow till the next one (so it is associated with hammer-ons and pull-offs). Total Guitar magazine talks about his technique (pag. 80 March 2012)
